Customer Story: How Green Industries Preserved 15 Years of Data While Moving Off Legacy Systems

When legacy software becomes a liability, the challenge isn’t just moving forward — it’s bringing your history with you.

Green Industries SA (GISA) had already begun their journey away from Zeus, their outdated Oracle-based system, with Biz Hub’s help. We had successfully migrated the grant and contract management components into a modern web application called GRID. However, one last piece was holding them back: a time-series module containing 15 years of waste management data. Until that module was dealt with, they couldn’t fully retire Zeus — and the costs of licences, infrastructure, and support kept piling up.

The challenge

The time-series module wasn’t small. It held:

  • 18 tables,
  • around 350,000 rows of data,
  • records spanning from 2008 to 2023,
  • and hundreds of associated attachments.

The task was clear: migrate everything into GRID without compromising integrity, while also providing analysts with better ways to explore and manage new data going forward.

For GISA, the stakes were high. If any of that history was lost, their ability to monitor trends, report on programs, and inform state-wide waste strategy would be compromised.

The solution

Biz Hub used our Wildcat ETL tool to extract, transform, and load the data into a purpose-built time-series module within GRID. This approach:

  • Migrated all historic data and attachments in one controlled process.
  • Added drag-and-drop spreadsheet imports with smart validation, so staff could load new datasets themselves without relying on external tools.
  • Introduced per-measure rules for ranges, data types, and security, ensuring data quality and privacy.
  • Enabled trend analysis with interactive charts, monthly/quarterly/yearly aggregations, and reusable report templates.

In short, the migration wasn’t just a “lift and shift.” It modernised how GISA managed their data while making sure every historic record was preserved.

The outcome

By the end of 2023, Zeus was officially shut down. That meant:

  • Oracle licence costs eliminated.
  • Server infrastructure freed up.
  • Staff no longer juggling two systems.

At the same time, GISA gained new capabilities:

  • A faster, more flexible way to import and validate new data.
  • Interactive analytics tools to explore long-term trends.
  • The ability to easily export data and manipulate it with R, which the team was comfortable with.
  • Confidence that their 15 years of historic data was intact and future-proof.

The result was more than just a migration. It was a transformation — turning slow, siloed legacy data into a modern, user-friendly system that supports decision-making across the organisation.
